ENGAGE

Focusing on frailty prevention and reducing social isolation for older persons

The ENGAGE project is dedicated to designing solutions for frailty prevention and the reduction of social isolation for older persons living in the community. Our mission is to develop innovative programs and initiatives that promote active and healthy aging, while fostering meaningful social connections. By leveraging innovative research methods and community engagement, we aim to create a supportive environment that enhances the well-being of older individuals.

What is frailty

Frailty is a condition that affects many older adults and describes a state of increased vulnerability due to the gradual decline in physical strength, energy, and resilience. It's more than just "getting old". Frailty can also affect how well someone recovers from illness or stress.

How is it linked to social isolation

Frailty often goes hand in hand with social isolation. When people have trouble walking, feel constantly tired, or experience memory issues, they may stop going out, seeing friends, or joining in community life. Over time, this can lead to loneliness and a loss of meaningful social connections. And just like physical frailty, social isolation can worsen a person’s health, creating a cycle where one reinforces the other. That’s why preventing frailty isn’t just about exercise or medical care, it also means staying socially active, connected, and involved.

How ENGAGE tackles frailty

ENGAGE is developing and supporting the implementation of resources for community-based programs that integrates physical and social activities to enhance health, resilience, and quality of life. By translating proven interventions from controlled research into real-world community settings, the project aims to empower older individuals to remain active, connected, and independent. Through structured collaboration with healthcare professionals, community organisations, and public stakeholders, ENGAGE is building a scalable and sustainable model that supports ageing well in place transforming evidence into action for lasting societal impact.
